WordPress is the most popular content management system in the world. If you have a business, you (hopefully) have a website and that website probably has a copy of WordPress under the hood.

“WordPress is used by more than 24% of the top 10 million websites in the world.” – W3Techs

Right out of the box, WordPress websites can take on an unlimited number of design and style configurations. That’s the beauty of using WordPress to design websites.

The downside to being so popular and good looking is that it often comes under attack from jealous hackers and malicious coders.

The first line of defense to a properly secured WordPress website is a complex password. Use numbers, capital letters and symbols in your password. The more complex the password the harder it is for bots (or humans) to break in.

If you’re having trouble remembering all of your passwords, use an application such as LastPass to remember them for you.

Sucuri Plugin to the Rescue

The folks at Sucuri have provided WordPress users a means to keep an eye on suspicious activity and un-hack malicious code if necessary.

To install the free plugin simply go to Dashboard > Plugins > Add New and search for Sucuri Security – Auditing, Malware Scanner and Security Hardening. Install and activate the plugin.

The Sucuri plugin will then prompt you to Generate API Key. Once you complete this process you’re good to go.

The Sucuri plugin will by default email you when certain actions are performed on the site like login attempts and file or page updates. You can also perform a Malware scan of your site. Go to Dashboard > Sucuri Security > Malware Scan. If anything looks suspicious you will want to investigate the issue right away.

The added benefit to using Securi is they can also clean and whitelist your website should it be compromised. If you suspect your site of being hacked, head back over to the Securi website and sign up for the AntiVirus and Firewall Basic plan. It’s $199 a year but worth every penny. They can walk you through the rest.

That pretty much covers the basic security setup for your WordPress website.
